Youth Summer Internship for High School Students
If you are interested in a summer internship with Birch Aquarium at Scripps, please read all of the information below.
As a Youth Summer Intern, you will help children and adults explore the wonders of marine science during their visit by interpreting our exhibits throughout the aquarium/museum.
Job Duties
- Greet visitors and answer general questions
- Present information during informal contacts
- Staff interpretive stations
- Handle live animals
- Work with a diverse group of volunteers and staff in a fun environment
Requirements:
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Excellent communication skills; comfortable talking to the public
- Punctual, reliable and flexible
- Able to work as part of a team with instructors and other interns
- Take initiative to recognize tasks that need to be done and do them
- Basic knowledge of biology with an interest in marine science and/or knowledge of marine science
- Able to lift tanks with animals and water

Your training will include:
- Birch Aquarium operation and program information
- Marine science and climate change content
- Interpretation and education methodologies
- Customer service skills
Work Schedule:
Shifts will be pre-assigned for two days a week, Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm. Internship dates and application materials will be available in February 2009.
All volunteer and internship programs are unpaid.
