Island of the Great White Shark: Film Screening with Producer/Cinematographer Richard Theiss

Tue, Jan 06 2009
Two hundred miles south of San Diego, Isla Guadalupe, a remote island off Baja, Mexico, serves as one of nature's dwindling sanctuaries for the great white shark. In a race against time, marine researchers and ecotourists have forged a unique alliance to study and protect these animals from potential slaughter. This is a countdown to survival for the great white sharks of Isla Guadalupe. Join filmmaker Richard Theiss at the Birch Aquarium as he screens Island of the Great White Shark, an award-winning 43-minute documentary that captures the true nature of these magnificent predators and chronicles the efforts of conservationists and scientists working to understand and protect these sharks before it is too late. Worldwide, more than 100 million sharks are caught each year, either as accidental bycatch or as a source of fins for the Asian delicacy, shark fin soup. See remarkable close-up footage combined with expert interviews in this ground-breaking, comprehensive look at Isla Guadalupe's incredible great white sharks. There will be a question and answer session with Richard Theiss following the screening. Island of the Great White Shark DVDs will be for sale in the aquarium bookshop until 6:30 p.m. and can be signed by the filmmaker. RSVP: 858/534-4109 Members Free Public $8

Andrew Dickson, Marine Chemist As a result of human activities, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are higher now than they have been for millions of years. But the atmosphere is not the only resting place for such excess carbon dioxide. Almost half of the carbon dioxide emitted by human activities has been absorbed by the ocean, changing its chemistry in ways that may have significant effects on marine ecosystems. Join Andrew Dickson as he explains what we know (and what we don't) about this emerging problem.
